3D scan and reconstructed CAD model of an industrial component used for reverse engineering

Reverse Engineering

Scan-to-CAD, Legacy Part Reconstruction & Design Modification

Turn existing parts, tooling and physical geometry into usable CAD models built for the next engineering step.

REBUILD THE GEOMETRY YOU ACTUALLY NEED

A useful reverse-engineered model has to reflect how the CAD will be used. That may mean preserving the measured condition of an existing part, rebuilding the original design intent behind worn or imperfect geometry, or combining both approaches in the same model.

CAMS combines 3D scanning with CAD reconstruction to create geometry for replacement parts, design modification, tooling, documentation, fit-up and downstream manufacturing. The workflow can begin with a physical component, partial design data or an existing scan, with the modelling approach defined around how the finished CAD will be used.

PROJECT EXAMPLES

AS-BUILT, IDEALIZED OR A COMBINATION

Physical parts contain manufacturing variation, wear, damage and features that may not represent the geometry that should exist in a new model. Before modelling begins, we define which characteristics need to be preserved and which should be reconstructed to design intent.

  • As-built geometry: preserve measured condition where actual fit, wear or surrounding geometry matters.
  • Design-intent geometry: reconstruct nominal planes, cylinders, patterns and other features where the model needs to represent the intended part.
  • Verification: compare reconstructed CAD back to the scan or critical measured geometry where confirmation is useful.
